We are seeking a diligent and motivated Mortgage Underwriter to join our team! The ideal candidate will have excellent phone and communication skills and a strong commitment to providing exceptional customer service to both internal and external clients. In this role, you will validate income, asset, and collateral documents, including self-employed tax returns and condominium documents. You may work on various types of mortgage lending, including Conventional, Non-QM, FHA, VA, USDA, and more.
Key Responsibilities:
- Review and analyze residential mortgage loan requests to determine approval or denial.
- Examine financial statements, credit reports, ratios (e.g., debt-to-income, loan-to-value), appraisals, title reports, and other relevant documentation.
- Validate income and employment information and assess the value of a borrower's collateral and assets.
- Ensure submitted files meet Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac, FHA, VA, and USDA guidelines based on automated findings.
- Evaluate information on mortgage loan documents to confirm compliance with established investor standards.
- Verify that property specifications and loan terms align with financial institution requirements and government regulations.
- Maintain compliance with industry standards, state and federal laws, and disclosure requirements.
- Communicate loan decisions to internal lenders, coordinators, and processors.
- Document the reasons for loan approval or denial in the loan file.
- Work remotely, with the possibility of occasional in-office work based on business needs (advance notice will be provided).
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- 5+ years of recent retail residential mortgage underwriting experience (FHA, VA, USDA, and Conventional) with a strong knowledge of agency guidelines.
- Strong working knowledge of USDA.
- DE, SAR, and LAPP certifications are a plus.
- Familiarity with ATR/QM Requirements.
- Experience with Encompass LOS.
- Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, dynamic environment while meeting minimum production standards.
- High integrity and a strong work ethic are essential.
- Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.
- Knowledge of compliance and disclosure requirements.
- Understanding of closing, post-closing, and quality control responsibilities.
- Preference for applicants residing and working in Eastern Standard Time (EST) business hours.
