Description SUMMARY OF DUTIES: Under the direction of the Municipal Judge, this position's primary responsibilities include, but are not limited to, providing courtroom security and managing courtroom operations under the supervision of the Chief Bailiff. A deputy bailiff will assist and coordinate the administration and operations of court functions. Other duties include data entry, files and record management, and serving of warrants, levies, evictions, and other court-related notices as required.
Examples of Duties DESCRIPTION OF ALL DUTIES: - Provide security and/or medical emergency services in the courtroom.
- Observe, search, prepare, unlock/lock courtrooms, court areas, and jury rooms to ensure that rooms/areas are neat and orderly.
- Perform X-ray and/or metal detection of individuals and materials before entering the courtroom.
- Sign in all individuals appearing for court and ensure each is listed on the docket.
- Take custody of the jurors, assist jurors in finding seats, and distribute jury questionnaires to jurors.
- Collect evidence from juries and in-court sessions.
- Prevent any distractions in the courtroom during trial proceedings. Keep courtroom disruptions to a minimum through necessary removal or arrest.
- Serve eviction orders, garnishments, civil lawsuit notices, and asset seizure notices.
- Escort defendants to and from the courtroom.
- Close courtrooms when hearings and or trials are over or out of session.
- Perform administrative tasks, data entry via computer, prepare for hearings, and prepare audio and digital case files for all hearing sessions.
- Other duties assigned as needed.

Typical Qualifications ESSENTIAL KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS: - Excellent communication and computer skills required.
- Strong public relations and interpersonal skills required.
- Conflict resolution and negotiation skills necessary.
- Able to express ideas clearly when speaking and understand spoken information.
- Able to work calmly with the public, including frustrated and unruly individuals.
- Able to monitor events, actions, materials, and surroundings.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: - High school diploma or G.E.D. required.
- Associates degree in criminal justice or law enforcement preferred.
- Minimum of three years of law enforcement or court system experience.
- Valid Ohio Driver's License.
- Court Officer Firearms Basic Training Certified by Ohio Peace Officer Training Academy (OPOTA) is preferred.
- First aid and CPR certification.
- Computer and data entry experience.
Supplemental Information PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS The physical demands described here are representative of those that an employee must meet to perform the essential functions of this position successfully. Because a primary function of a deputy bailiff is security and may involve physical contact, bailiffs must be physically able to meet the demands of the job, including, but not limited to, the ability to stand or walk at least eight (8) hours per day and the ability to push, pull, or lift at least thirty (30) pounds at any given time.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS - Excellent attendance is imperative.
- Will be responsible for obtaining a valid Ohio License to Carry a Concealed Weapon permit.
- Must be capable and prepared to purchase, maintain and register a firearm/handgun for employment purposes.
